SNAP - photo tips

These are notes from the classes I took at SNAP and are obviously the things that stood out to me, things I want to implement, etc - check out their blog for more info on the sessions, better pictures, fun times, etc.

I went to a couple of photo classes from Kristen Duke - she offers some great photo ebooks, so be sure to check out her site for those.  I've reviewed the Say No to Auto in the past and it's a great guide if you want to learn more about using your camera.

So anyways, things that I took note of:

  • to invoke candid moments, use action words (jump, dance, whisper, cuddle, huddle, etc)
  • capture the moments before and after the action - they are more real
  • for smiles during posed moments, try talking about favorites songs (maybe sing them with the wrong words to get a laugh), video games, sports, having them say "A E I O U"
  • pull kids aside and take their pictures without their parents hovering and making them nervous

I also took her class on full-sun photography which is something I really struggle with - I avoid the sun at all costs!  I didn't take notes during that class, but it was interesting to give full sun a chance. (Normally I tweek photos a little in photoshop, but all of the ones on this post are straight out of the camera so you can get an idea of that)

  2. I avoid full sun too. I hate how it washes out the photo. Believe it or not, a professional photographer took our family photo (large family reunion) in full sun. It's horrid.
