Colorful Garlands

I might be addicted to making fun, colorful garlands - - - I can't get enough!  Well, actually I only made two, but still....let me tell you about them and their awesomeness

First up, the Paper Ball Garland (you might have seen a glimpse of this on Trevor's Blog Post)-

I saw this over at MADE - hers is really cute with the solid colors:

But I wanted to go a little crazier so I used some fun patterned paper mixed in with solid paper - there was a huge sale on packs of paper at Michael's, so of course I stocked up.

MADE has a detailed tutorial, so check out that if you need it.  I got a big circle punch for Christmas anticipating it's many crafty uses - and it was perfect for this project.

I made stacks of 5 circles (because some of my paper was cardstock so I was worried about thickness issues with anything else) and just ran those stacks through the sewing machine.

Can you believe that this is the first time I have sewn on paper - me either!  I just ran it through like fabric, didn't change the settings or anything.  I see a lot more of this in my future....although since it was a thick stack I was breaking the thread on my regular machine, so I busted out the trusty standby that I use for thick projects - it powers through anything!

Then you just fold the paper around the thread to make it stick out various ways.

I love the mix of patterns and solids and the bright fun colors!

So, next up I made a scrap fabric garland.  Also fun and cheerful:

I cut a length of twine and just tied strips of fabric to it - it was that easy.  So easy that I didn't take any how-to pictures for you.

I included strips of burlap in the garland because I thought it added depth and texture.  I will be using both of these garlands to top off a bulletin board (more on that to come...)

Have you made any garlands??  Leave me a link in the comments and I'll check them out.  Maybe I'll even do a garland round-up, because like I said, I think I'm hooked!

  1. Both garlands look great, but I especially like the circles. I bet the kids think the garlands are pretty cool, too :)
