Colorful Garlands

I might be addicted to making fun, colorful garlands - - - I can't get enough!  Well, actually I only made two, but still....let me tell you about them and their awesomeness

First up, the Paper Ball Garland (you might have seen a glimpse of this on Trevor's Blog Post)-

I saw this over at MADE - hers is really cute with the solid colors:

But I wanted to go a little crazier so I used some fun patterned paper mixed in with solid paper - there was a huge sale on packs of paper at Michael's, so of course I stocked up.

MADE has a detailed tutorial, so check out that if you need it.  I got a big circle punch for Christmas anticipating it's many crafty uses - and it was perfect for this project.

I made stacks of 5 circles (because some of my paper was cardstock so I was worried about thickness issues with anything else) and just ran those stacks through the sewing machine.

Can you believe that this is the first time I have sewn on paper - me either!  I just ran it through like fabric, didn't change the settings or anything.  I see a lot more of this in my future....although since it was a thick stack I was breaking the thread on my regular machine, so I busted out the trusty standby that I use for thick projects - it powers through anything!

Then you just fold the paper around the thread to make it stick out various ways.

I love the mix of patterns and solids and the bright fun colors!

So, next up I made a scrap fabric garland.  Also fun and cheerful:

I cut a length of twine and just tied strips of fabric to it - it was that easy.  So easy that I didn't take any how-to pictures for you.

I included strips of burlap in the garland because I thought it added depth and texture.  I will be using both of these garlands to top off a bulletin board (more on that to come...)

Have you made any garlands??  Leave me a link in the comments and I'll check them out.  Maybe I'll even do a garland round-up, because like I said, I think I'm hooked!

Both garlands look great, but I especially like the circles. I bet the kids think the garlands are pretty cool, too :)

I love the paper garland!!! I wonder how my machine would handle it...... Hmmm. I made a yarnball garland for a craft challenge. Im kind of obsessed with it! http://mylifeinpencil.blogspot.com/2013/01/2013-craft-challenge-leftovers-pj.html

What fantastic colors! I wish I had a working sewing machine right now.

I need to try sewing through paper. I'm thinking of making a paper heart garland like the Kindergarten 10 days one you made! So fun!

Super cute! I am in love with the whole sewing through paper thing.

i didnt know the paper ball was going to be sooo easy!! I must do that!
I am also dying to make a scrap fabric garland, I just might have to do one to dress up the boring tan curtain's in my baby's room

So cute and spring-y! Perfect for the weather we're having here on the third coast right now! Check out my Easter garland from paint chips here: http://sassypantsstudio.blogspot.com/2012/04/my-paint-chip-project.html

I love both of these! I've never really sewn anything but definitely not paper :) Glad it went well with your machine.

I'm a scrappy garland addict! I make paper garlands a lot for parties, but I've never done a 3-d version. Definitely going on the to-do list because it's adorable! :)

I'm in love with garlands! I mae Dana's happy garland every time someone has a baby haha! If you haven't made that one its equally as addicting as paper :)
